ABB has announced the launch of the USB disk drive replacement kit for its robot controller models S4 to S4C.
The kit replaces the floppy disk drive unit and disks with a USB connection point, allowing users to transfer all their stored programs and data to a standard USB memory stick. It also provides a connection point for a PC.
According to ABB, data and programs for robot controllers can cost thousands of dollars to develop, and are among the most valuable parts of a robot system.
However, the floppy disks used by the S4 and S4C have less than a third of the life expectancy of the rest of the robot system. Failure could cause the programs to be lost.
Transitioning over to USB could also yield benefits with the faster transfer time and lower risk of data loss. The storage capacity is also equivalent to 100 floppy disks.
The disk drive replacement kit comes complete in a package containing all the parts necessary to install and run the USB device, including an instruction and installation manual.
The unit is supplied with two formatted and ready-to-use USB sticks, compatible to the selected system version. Additional formatted USB sticks are available from ABB.
